Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is established.

Steven Maier is the founding artistic director. Its purpose is to provide free, outdoor, summer productions of Shakespeare’s work in Boston. The first production is A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Copley Square. Subsequent productions take place at the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common.
